Since the Supreme Court decision of Roe vs. Wade, supporters from both sides of the issue have demonstrated and gone to jail in support of their position. People have died and have been killed due to the abortion controversy. The battle in New York City heats up between the two factions prior to the opening of the Common Ground Convention, an effort made up of people from both the pro-choice and pro-life sides trying to end the violence of the their more radical supporters.

One of the conference leaders, Dr. Felice Romero, head of a women s life care clinic, is a target of the anti-abortion forces of SOS, a radical group led by the charismatic, but dangerous Jonathan Crowell. As the conference date nears, the death threats against Felice dramatically increase, forcing her to hire a private bodyguard, Atticus Kodiak and his cohorts to protect herself and her sixteen-year old Down-syndrome daughter. Even though Atticus surrounds the duo with a ring of protection, it turns out to be inadequate. Tensions escalate and the death toll mounts with a final, brutal confrontation imminent. It is ironic that it finally happens at the funeral of an innocent victim of a war she never truly understood.

For a first time author, Greg Rucka knows how to pack a lot of emotional fire power into Keeper, a novel that shows just how ugly and violent people can become over the volatile issue of abortion. The issue is built into an explosive story line that will satisfy any reader who enjoys a hard boiled detective tale, a thriller, and a police procedural rolled into one dynamic package.Readers will be eager to follow the further adventures of Atticus and his helpers.
